BlackBerry Pearl: My One Complaint

I <3 my BlackBerry Pearl.

I love the small, sleek design. I love the clear screen, the email function, the calendar and social media apps (think: TwitterBerry, Facebook …). I love the .. well, you get the idea.

However, there is one feature I do not like: The camera.

My chief complaint is that the options are so awkward to negotiate that all the photos I take are either super grainy, very blurry or completely unrecognisable. I submit a blurry / grainy example for your viewing displeasure.

According to the few reviews I have seen, including this one, the BlackBerry Pearl Camera is quite comparable with other camera phones. I refuse to read any more of those opinions.

I might start to think the fault lies with the operator.

So, here I am writing a first post for my new blog-of-sorts at posterous.

As I type, I’m congratulating myself on the great find and chuckling at the convoluted way I made it here. So, how did I come to join posterous? It all started with this tweet with a link to this post. With my cursor hovering over the photo I noticed the link to this url. I clicked and, well, here I am. :)

Appealing to me is the the idea that I can post here as well as multiple other social media sites with the same ease and simplicity as sending an email.

From the opening phrase “You have now entered into a legally binding contract” to the closing smilie “;)” – I was spellbound. What could this be? The <140 character Twitter notification from @markhawker had captured my attention and my curiosity. The link, cleverly disguised as a shortened url, led me to an enlightening list of seven things about Mark Hawker that I was hitherto ignorant. (It’s well worth a look, Mark My Words). So, here I am; tagged and bound to share seven random facts. What a great way to top off a very random year!

I have an insatiable appetite for learning new words and reacquainting myself with old words. It all started with my habit of ‘reading’ my Oxford English Dictionary (and any other dictionary I could get my hands on) and has evolved into multiple ‘word a day’ subscriptions. When I find a new word, I like to cross-reference the definition/s in multiple dictionaries, google it, check the etymology and then of course – use it!
I love Jane Austen novels. I used to hate them. My negative opinion was at its peak when a few were set for compulsory reading in high school. At the time, my grandfather would say he thought I should at least like Pride and Prejudice because Elizabeth Bennet and I are so similar. :S I wasn’t impressed. But now, I have nothing but admiration for the author’s ability to entertain while providing an accurate insight into human nature. Her stories are timeless. The transition from loathe to love of Jane Austen’s novels occurred gradually and I cannot explain how it happened. Perhaps I grew up.
One day, I will own a Vespa.
My first job was as a farmhand on a sheep and cattle property, during my school holidays. The experiences I had during the few short weeks of work have provided me with numerous oddball anecdotes to disturb polite company.
All my real names can be used as first names or surnames. As the old expression goes, if I had a dollar for every person who has called me by my surname I would be a millionaire.
I am not a millionaire.
I prefer 7 Up over Sprite. Both are supposed to be lemon-lime in flavour. IMHO, Sprite tastes like regular lemonade.

From my BB to you

While looking for a good way to blog from my BB, I came across wordpress gadget. It is accessible via the internet and features the ability to check very basic stats, to post (as I am doing now) and to save bookmarks. As far as posting is concerned, I can type a title, content and add tags. I also have the option to save as draft or publish. It will be more fun to publish and check the online result later so that is what I will do.

Setting out to explore Medicine 2.0 and Health 2.0

With no university until next year, I have a little extra time to freely explore tangents I resisted pursuing throughout the semester. Believe me, when you are chronically time poor it is imperative to stay on task!

One tangent I have just begun to explore (and am already excited about) is the use of new media in medicine and health. How are new technologies and communications being used by practitioners? patients? family and friends? What are the benefits and drawbacks? Obviously, www.scienceroll.com is going to make a great starting point for my investigations.

I read with interest How Many Blogs Does the World Need? written by Michael Kinsley for TIME.

The article reflects on the sheer volume of active blogs on the Internet and their recent, rapid development in influence, style, purpose and content. Kinsley acknowledges that blogging, be it from a professional or amateur platform, is:

… a genuinely new literary form, which, at its best, combines the immediacy of talking with the reflectiveness of writing.

Striking a balance between what I interpret as the informality of talking with the more measured, formal aspect of reflective writing is something I hope to achieve … in time!

Inaugural post

Just for fun, I was so tempted to write a forward or prologue similar to that which is often found at the beginning of many textbooks. You know, the type that goes something like, “it was with much editorial encouragement and a great deal of trepidation that I set out to contribute yet another tome to the already lengthy list of texts on this subject and I certainly would not have done so had it not been for … “. Hah! No. Not a good idea.

As I stake my claim in the blogosphere I note that wordpress now hosts well over four million blogs. What do I hope to achieve with this blog? I would like to develop my writing (without the pressure of always presenting a polished piece) while exploring my interests and goals. Although I do not expect to attract an avid readership, I would be delighted if someone other than myself occasionally dropped by. :)
